Military troops uncover NPA lairs in Mindoro towns

CAMP CAPINPIN, Tanay, Rizal -- The Philippine Army’s 2nd Infantry “Jungle Fighter” Division (2ID) here on Friday bared the discovery of two communist New People’s Army (NPA) hideouts in Sitio Malangawan, Barangay Panaytayan, Mansalay town, and Sitio Naswak, Barangay Hagan, Bongabong town, both in Oriental Mindoro.

Military officials attributed the discovery of the rebels’ lairs in the remote areas of Mindoro on Thursday to concerned residents.

Brig. Gen. Arnulfo Marcelo B. Burgos Jr., 2ID commander, whose jurisdiction covers the regions of Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) and Mimaro (Mindoro Oriental/Occidental, Marinduque and Romblon), said the military will protect the residents in the areas and secure the discovered hideouts to prevent the rebels from returning.

Brig. Gen. Marceliano V. Teofilo, commander of the 203rd Brigade, which has operational jurisdiction over Mindoro, said “the harbor areas can accommodate more or less 30 terrorists.”

“Troops were able to recover one generator set, five magazines of M16 rifle, five magazines of M14 rifle, bandoliers, backpack and other enemy paraphernalia from the harbor areas,” Teofilo said.

"Our efforts in pursuing those who commit terror against the community will be relentless and shall never falter for the people of Mindoro deserve to enjoy the fruits of peace and prosperity that they'll never experience in (the) hands of these rebels," he added.

The NPA, which has been waging a five-decade armed struggle, is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines. (PNA)
