Quirino vies for Nat'l Gawad Kalasag anew

CABARROGUIS, Quirino, Sept. 30 (PIA)—This province through the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) made it again to the top three finalists, along with Mountain Province and Sorsogon, for the 21st National Gawad KALASAG Award under the PDRRMC Category.

Last year, Quirino was among the top three finalists and it was adjudged second place with Pampanga as top winner and Dinagat Island as third place.

Governor Dakila Carlo E. Cua said the success of the province is attributed to the hard work of the previous administration of Former Governor now Congressman Junie Cua and the  cooperation of the different  agency members and stakeholders.

“The fact that Quirino is once again shortlisted in the national level is a manifestation of our strong determination to make Quirino as disaster-resilient and as climate change-adaptive as can be,” Cua said.

During the national  validation on September 19-21, 2019, the  composite team of validators namely Ryan Christopher Viado from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD),  Jezreel Pattaguan from the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) and Ma. Angela Monica Salud-Mamuyac from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)  assessed the programs, projects, accomplishments and good practices of the province on Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Response and Disaster Rehabilitation and Recovery to include innovations and best practices.

As part of the of the validation, the team visited the Sustainable Agricultural Economic Development to Anticipate Climate Change and Natural Disaster, a project of the Provincial Agriculture Office which was  funded   under the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.

The validators also on-site inspection of the installed signages, markers, early warning systems and DRRM facilities and equipment which include the  Evacuation Center and Emergency Operations Center where various search and rescue paraphernalia are kept.

The Gawad KALASAG which stands for KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan is the country's premier annual award given to individuals, non-government organizations, private sector and government organizations in recognition of their outstanding contribution in the fields of disaster risk reduction and management and humanitarian assistance.

It is the principal mechanism by which the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) advances awareness of the best practices on DRRM and humanitarian response and action. (ALM/TCB/PIA 2-Quirino)
