5 new Covid-19 cases reported in Samar town

TACLOBAN CITY – Five more residents in Tarangnan, Samar have tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), bringing its total cases to 14, the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Friday evening.

In a press statement, DOH 8 (Eastern Visayas) Director Minerva Molon said they were part of the 322 swab samples, mostly from close contacts of the town’s active coronavirus cases.

“One of the new cases is the daughter of a Covid-19 patient. There is also a sister and a close neighbor. One has visited the town’s community hospital, where several workers contracted the virus. While one attended the wake of a positive patient’s father,” Molon said.

The batch of samples also included the town mayor’s and some local personnel that turned out negative.

The new cases are now identified as the region’s Patient Nos. 15 to 19, she said.

The patients are confined at the town community hospital but those who would need further management will be transferred to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) here, the region’s referral hospital for coronavirus patients.

On April 27, the DOH confirmed the community transmission of the disease in Tarangnan after six residents contracted the virus from its first three positive cases.

The local government placed its 41 villages under total lockdown the next day, restricting the movement of residents out of their respective homes.

The fourth-class town is considered the most affected in Eastern Visayas, which has recorded 19 positive cases.

Other areas in the region with Covid-19 cases are Burauen in Leyte, Catarman in Northern Samar, and the cities of Catbalogan and Calbayog, both in Samar. (PNA)
