BRTTH limits admission of non-COVID patients

LEGAZPI CITY, May 8 —The Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH) have implemented adjustment in the admission of non-COVID patients to maintain the fullest standard of health care to patients while keeping its personnel safe.

BRTTH here in Albay limited its admissions to emergency cases, critical conditions, cases that need tertiary care and urgent surgical, obstetrical and gynecological procedures.

Dr. Rogelio “Butch” Rivera, BRTTH Medical Center Chief, said that 17 health care workers were infected during the battle for the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic in the region and more than a hundred are quarantined.

“We need to implement this scheme to ensure the safety of our health care workers, our patients and the community,” he stated.

Dr. Rogelio “Butch” Rivera, BRTTH Medical Center Chief, said that the strategy was to ensure the safety of the health care workers and patients currently admitted in the hospital.  He added that seven health care workers were infected during the battle for the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic in the region and more than a hundred are quarantined.

He added that they need to contain first the spread of COVID-19 inside the hospital through a disinfection procedure. It was after several of the facility’s health care workers tested positive for COVID-19.

Rivera explained that patients with mild to moderate non-respiratory conditions requiring confinement will be initially managed at the emergency room and subsequently be transferred to the nearest hospital after proper endorsement.

Moreover, the Out Patient Department (OPD) will be temporarily closed to augment the manpower for COVID-19. Other OPD services such as chemotherapy, dialysis, and OPD dispensing of essential medicines will be continuously provided, Rivera said.

Likewise, the Blood Bank as well as the basic hematology and clinical microscopy will remain fully operational, while X-rays will be routinely available.

Rivera affirmed that a consent for the patient’s transfer to other hospitals will be obtained and the means of transportation will be provided by the BRTTH whenever possible.

He added that BRTTH also coordinated with other public and private hospitals to lessen the burden of patients especially when it comes to financial needs. For now, at least six private hospitals have initially allotted 10 slots for patients referred by BRTTH with No Balance Billing.

For those who are not yet registered to the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), Rivera said they are willing to provide assistance for the patient’s enrollment to PhilHealth.

Currently, the BRTTH has 1,300 health care workers and administrative staff. (PIA5/CEB)
