Capiz, Antique local gov’t execs set aside politics to fight COVID-19

ILOILO CITY, May 24 (PIA) -- The fight against the dreaded coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) prompted politically divided local government officials to unite and work as one.

“I’m thankful na lang. Before kalaban sa politika, right now we work together. We did not compete, we complement by providing financial assistance given to the mayors,” Capiz Governor Esteban Evan B. Contreras shared during the May 20 episode of Mugstoria Ta!.

The online digital program of the Office of the Presidential Adviser for the Viayas (OPAV) is hosted by Assistant Secretary Jonjie Y. Gonzales.

During the episode where local government executives from Western and Eastern Visayas shared their best practices, Contreras said they strengthened their border controls and established resting hubs for those who man the borders.

He said the cooperation between the public and private sector has helped address the needs of the community such as food and medical requirements.

On her part, Antique Governor Rhodora Cadiao said that due to COVID-19, all local government executives have united to address the pandemic.

“Gusto kong ipaalam sa inyo na centuries na divisive ang Antique sa politika. For the first time, ang pinakamagandang nagawa ng COVID ay lahat kami nag-unite; lahat na mga mayors. (I would like to inform you that for centuries, politics in Antique has been divisive. For the first time, because of COVID, we are united; all the mayors),” Cadiao said.

She added that the measures implemented include the setting up of quarantine areas at the Antique's borders as well as borders between LGUs.

Cadiao also said that the province also helped the farmers, who had difficulty in disposing of their produce, the governor said.

Antique included these farmer’s produce in their food packs while some were turned over to vendors in barangay satellite markets.

Other guests during the program were Samar 2nd District Representative Sharee Ann T. Tan and Ormoc City mayor Richard Gomez. (JBG-PIA6/With reports from OPAV)
