COVID-19 cases in Davao City on the downtrend

DAVAO CITY, Feb. 24 (PIA)- The Davao City COVID-19 focal person noticed a downtrend in COVID-19 cases in Davao City on the third week of February, this year.

Dr. Ashley Lopez, acting City Health Officer and City COVID-19 focal person said that as of yesterday February 23, the reported cases as of 6:00 pm were 37, while the active cases dropped from 1,500 and now at 748, lowering down at 50 percent. 

He revealed that as of yesterday the total number of COVID-19 in the city stands at 12,832 since the pandemic started. 

Lopez said the total number of recovered patients stands at 11, 448 with 53 recoveries in February 24.

“Davao City has now a recovery rate at 89 percent,” Lopez said. 

He underscored that it will be an achievement if the city can surpass the 93.1 percent recovery rate nationwide.

Lopez bared it is possible that the city can hit a single digit cases per day with the hope that the city will reach a plateau of COVID-19 cases depending on the cooperation of everyone from the government and the private sector. 

He stressed that ordinary people can participate by complying the laws and minimum public health standards imposed by the city government. 

Lopez also bared that there is also a reduction of the occupancy rate of the temporary treatment and monitoring facilities at 19 to 20 occupancy rates. 

“It means we have 75 percent available beds for COVID-19 cases,” he said.  

Lopez narrated that with this development, the city has decided to reduce the number of TTMFs, by giving up the Midori Hotel and the Dona Carmen Elementary School.  “Consequently, the city can save with its investments,” he said.

He also revealed that the real time polymerase chain reaction swab test results of all the relatives of a 10-year-old boy earlier reported to have been afflicted by a U.K variant of COVID-19 were negative and all of them are almost through with their quarantine.

Lopez observed there was no surge in the particular barangay where the boy is staying and the patient was stable and fully recovered when found by the health authorities.

He said the local government continues to support the daily needs of the family. 

Lopez also showed that there was a second tranche of samples examined by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Muntinglupa, Manila for genome sequencing, and nothing positive came out of the samples from Davao City.  (PIA XI-Joey Sem G. Dalumpines)
