600 Cordillera rookie cops take oath

CAMP DANGWA, Benguet -- The Police Regional Office in the Cordillera (PROCor) on Monday administered the oath of 600 new police officers here.

They comprise about 30 percent of the 1,975 applicants who successfully hurdled the rigid screening process, which includes physical, medical and neurological tests.

The class is composed of 480 males and 120 females, who comprised the quota for 600 police officers in the PROCor.

“We are one of the regions that received a big quota for new policemen, others got only about 300. They considered not just the population to police ratio but also the uniqueness of our area which is mountainous which needs a bigger team of policemen that will perform police functions,” said PROCor chief, Brigadier General Israel Ephraim Dickson, on the sidelines of the oath-taking ceremony on Monday.

“Mas maganda pag mas maraming pulis para mas effective at efficient ang pagpapatupad natin ng ating trabaho (it is better if we have more policemen so that they will be more effective and efficient in the performance of their function),” Dickson said.

The police population ratio in the region is 1:300, which is ideal considering its geographical location.

He said the new policemen with the rank of Patrolman and Patrolwoman will undergo six months of training at the Cordillera Administrative Region Training Center (CARTC) located at Teachers Camp, Baguio City.

Col. Manuelito Parazo, regional training director of the CARTC, said the trainees will also receive military training and academics.

This include training on combat and anti-insurgency operations while the academics will include laws, police operational procedures, discipline and moral ethics.

Parazo said 30 percent of the lessons during the six months period will be on discipline, morals and ethics. He added that part of the training is to strengthen the spiritual fiber of the person.

Dickson advised the new policemen to leave their civilian lives and start adopting the lives of a uniformed personnel.

“Set aside civilian mentality and your acts should be in accordance with the mission and vision of the PNP. There are many things which are distinct in the PNP, embrace the tradition, the rules and regulations,” Dickson said.

He also told the rookie policemen that priority should start to be for the public and not for themselves.

“Render duty to the community above and beyond personal interest,” the director said.

Dickson added that the organization needs new breed of dedicated policemen, who will help the country’s fight against terrorism, insurgency and all forms of criminality. (PNA)
