1.9K Pangasinenses avail of scholarship for PUV drivers, kin

DAGUPAN CITY – Some 1,900 Pangasinenses availed of a scholarship for public utility vehicles (PUV) drivers and their family members under the “Tsuper Iskolar” program of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

Maganda po itong program na ito dahil marami po akong natutunan. Dati construction work lang ang ginagawa ko pero ngayon may additional income na ako sa pag-wi-welding kaya nagpapasalamat po sa programang ito (This program is beneficial because I have learned a lot. Before, my only skill was on construction work but now I have an additional income in welding so I am thankful for this program),” said Jiovannie Torio, one of the beneficiaries from this city, in an interview on Friday.

Torio is a family member of a PUV driver who finished a welding course through the program.

DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade, in an interview on Thursday, urged Pangasinense PUV drivers and their family members to continue to avail of the said program as there are still available slots.

He announced that the scholarship slots for Pangasinenses increased from 2,000 to 4,000.

“This is complementary to the livelihood of jeepney drivers; an augmentation to their income. So, it is not limited to the drivers alone, but also to their family members (up to the third degree of consanguinity or affinity). Later on, even the other family members can contribute to the family’s income,” he said.

He added this is part of the government’s aim to provide a comfortable life for every Filipino.

Aside from the free skills training, skills assessment, and entrepreneurship training by TESDA, Tugade said the scholars are also entitled to a training support fund worth PHP350 per training day to cover food and transportation allowance within the 35-day training.

The program covers skills training, skills assessment, and entrepreneurship training, including the development of training regulations and curricula for the transportation sector.

Tugade said his department has allotted PHP350 million for the program to be transferred from DOTr to TESDA, which will be used for the skills training, skills assessment, and entrepreneurship training, including the development of training regulations and curricula for the transportation sector.
